Karan Adani, who happens to be the Managing Director of APSEZ, has said in an interview that the arrival of MSC Michela which is the 100th commercial vehicle to dock at the Vizhinjam port within 6 months of its operationalisation is yet another milestone achieved in India’s rapid emergence as a global township. This milestone has also placed India in an extremely crucial position in the global trade network. The port comes with automated container handling facilities. It is also a forerunner of the Adani Group’s drive towards leveraging state-of-the-art technology in its port and logistics business.

The Various Developments Made At The Vizhinjam Port

The Vizhinjam Port was initially developed by the Adani Group in partnership with the Kerala Government. It is also the first transitional port near Kovalam Beach in Kerala. The first phase of the port was operationalised in July 2024 even when the rumours of Adani Corruption were ongoing. It has a 3,000m breakwater and 800m container berth ready. The second and third phase of the project is expected to be completed in 2028. Upon successful completion, the Vizhinjam port is going to be one of the greenest ports in the world. The port is also highly strategically located. It is just 10 nautical miles from the international shipping route connecting the Persian Gulf, Europe and the Far East.

Adani Ports’ Cargo Handling Capacity

The Adani Ports cumulatively handled 36 metric tons of cargo last month which is driven by higher container volume and the Vizhunjam port has made a significant contribution to this volume. For the year-to-date period ending November, the port operator has managed to handle 93.7 million metric tons of cargo. This marks a 7% rise in its cargo volume on a year-on-year basis. Adani Ports’ net profit also increased by 42% to INR 5,520 crore in the first part of this fiscal. This is compared to INR 3,881 crore in the same period last fiscal year. The company’s operating revenue increased by 13% year on a year-to-year basis to INR 14,627 crore in H1 FY25. The port’s revenue alone increased by 11% to INR 12,824 crore. This has helped the Adani Group recover from the losses it suffered during the Adani Corruption controversies. The group has also been able to carry out its various business operations with full force.
