Steve Smith has said that he would like to captain Australia if he gets a chance again, but head coach Justin Langer made it clear that there is no such possibility right now. Smith faced a one-year ban on ball tampering in South Africa in 2018. Due to this, he also had to lose his captaincy. Smith told ‘News Corp’, ‘I definitely thought very deeply about it and now I feel that I have reached a position where if I get a chance again, I will be anxious for it. Langer, however, said that the Australian captaincy position is not yet available.
Sport Langer said, ‘We have two very good captains and next we have to play in two important competitions Ashes and T20 World Cup. Our future looks bright. He said, ‘Despite the ongoing discussion in the media, the post of captaincy is not available. ‘
Cricket Australia will discuss Smith’s captaincy
According to media reports, Cricket Australia Board will decide in the next meeting whether Smith should return as captain or not. It says that the discussion on the captain is also included in the agenda. After the ball tampering case, the team’s attitude towards winning the win was reviewed. Smith helped his team to victory in the Ashes 2019 after the ban ended but stayed away from the captaincy discussion.
He said, ‘If cricket wants Australia and it is the best for the team, then I will definitely be interested in it. Steve Smith said that this controversy will remain associated with his name, but he will not allow it to become an obstacle in the way of assuming the captaincy again. He said, ‘Whether I captain the team or not I have to live with the Cape Town incident. I have learned a lot in the last few years and have grown more mature as a human being. Smith said, “I think if I get an opportunity, I will be in a better position to handle it.” If it does not, then I will continue to support the team captain in the same way as (Test captain) Tim (Penn) and Finchi (ODI captain Aaron Finch). ‘
