huge fire broke out at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Market, a major market in the cantonment area, at around 4 in the morning. The accident completely burnt down about 25 shops in the market, causing a loss of millions of rupees. The fire was brought under control with the help of eight vehicles of Pune Cantonment and Municipal Fire Department. The fire is believed to have started due to a short circuit. The British-era Chhatrapati Shivaji Market is two hundred years old. The market has stalls of fish, chicken vendors and vegetable-fruit vendors. According to Manzoor Sheikh, president of the market traders’ association, 17 fishmongers and eight chicken vendors in the market were completely burnt in the accident, which cost the shop owners millions of rupees. The wooden roofs of the market, the old teak wood, are in disrepair.
