For the past few weeks, India has seen an average of 40,000 cases per day. Although some states in Kerala and northeast have seen a rise in Coronavirus infections, last week’s data suggests that there has been a plateau in cases.
According to data released by the Union Health Ministry on Tuesday, India had 28,204 new Coronavirus infections within the past 24 hours. This is the lowest number in 147 days (since March 16, 2013). It brings the total Covid-19 count to 3,19,98.158. A drop of 400 has also been recorded in the number of deaths per day due to Covid-19 complications.
India’s Covid-19 death rate has risen to 4,28,682, with 373 deaths in the past 24 hours, according to the health ministry. The country’s active Covid-19 cases also fell to 3,88,508, which is the lowest number in 139 days. According to Tuesday’s health ministry, the national Covid-19 recovery rate rose to 97.45%. This is the highest recovery rate ever, it was said.

Many states/UTs announced that schools will reopen for offline classes as the Covid situation remains under control. From Monday, schools in Delhi were reopened for classes from XII to XII. Maharashtra’s government also announced that physical classes will be reopened in urban and rural schools starting on August 17. Uttar Pradesh will reopen intermediate schools beginning August 16. After a three-month gap, the Odisha government has already reopened schools to students in classes 10-12 on July 26, after which there had been no further action. The Northeastern state Meghalaya also plans to reopen educational facilities after mid-August. Karnataka recently announced that it will resume offline classes for students in Class 9-10 and pre-university college students starting August 23.
India’s vaccine production received a boost Tuesday when the government approved Bharat Biotech’s Ankleshwar-based manufacturing facility to produce COVID-19 vaccine Covaxin. Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Health Minister, tweeted: “Govt of India approves vaccine production facility for #BharatBiotech’s #Covaxin Ankleshwar in Gujarat.” He added that the approval would increase the availability of Covid-19 vaccinations in the country.
The global problem with the Delta variant continues to be more severe for many countries. Yesterday, China reported more Covid-19 cases in its latest outbreak. In an effort to reduce locally transmitted infections, many Chinese cities have added mass testing. Since July 20, the highly infectious Delta variant was detected in more than 12 cities in China. Officials have instructed local governments to closely monitor infections and close any loopholes in their control efforts. On Monday, the UK reported 25161 new coronavirus cases.
Health department data shows that between August 3rd and August 9th, the number of coronavirus cases increased by 5.2% over the seven days prior. Due to the rapid spread and low vaccination rates of the Delta variant, Covid-19 hospitalisations and cases in the US are at an all-time high. Public health data shows that daily cases have increased by 35% in the past week to more than 100,000, an increase of over 35% in the last three days.
