India and Myanmar have a borderline of more than 1600 kilometers and are not barred at all. In the meantime, voices are rising from the state of Mizoram that the Indian government should not hurry to send back people coming from Myanmar as it may endanger their lives.
However, the Government of India has asked the governments and border
Security forces of the four provinces along the Myanmar border – Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram and Manipur – to identify the refugees coming from neighboring countries and send them back. But on the other hand due to the situation arising in Myanmar, people from there continue to come to India.
In Mizoram alone, more than a thousand refugees from Myanmar have taken refuge in different villages and towns within the last month and a half.
Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga held a virtual meeting of Myanmar’s exiled government with Foreign Minister Jin Mang Ung, which the Indian media termed as ‘unexpected’ because India has not yet recognized Myanmar’s exiled government.
Earlier, Zoramthanga had written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, according to the news, to provide relief to Myanmar refugees. Mizoram’s politicians and other organizations are trying to change the attitude of the Indian government by holding meetings at different levels with the government in Delhi.
Mizoram’s Rajya Sabha MP K Vanlalwena has said that he has met officials of the Government of India.
He told, ‘We and my colleagues have also met other officials of the Government of India in this matter. We have met the Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, we have also met the Union Home Secretary in the matter. We have met the Joint Secretary overseeing Myanmar affairs in the Ministry of External Affairs only yesterday evening. We hope that the Indian government will change its stand in this matter.
After the coup in Myanmar on February 1,
The Government of India issued a statement saying that it is concerned about the recent developments there and hopes that the law and the democratic system will be maintained. Meanwhile, a condolence meeting is being organized for the people killed during the ongoing demonstrations in Myanmar at Mizoram Bhawan in Delhi.
Local people and voluntary organizations of Mizoram have collected donations for the refugees from there, besides providing food, roof and help for them.
Among the people who came to India from Myanmar, there used to be more than a hundred and fifty policemen there.
K Vanlalwena has told that they need to help the refugees by making a list. He said, ‘The first thing is that camps for those coming from Myanmar should be set up and they should be helped in every way, they should be given food and second aid. We want the Indian government not to remain silent on this matter and make more efforts to establish democracy in Myanmar.
The Mizoram and North-Eastern states belong to the same tribal groups, on the other hand, it is difficult for the Indian government to pressurize many militant groups operating in the North-East and the arrest of its top leaders by the Myanmar military regime in India. Has assisted many times in the past.
At the same time, with egard to Myanmar’s tilt towards China, the Indian government has to step up its relations with the neighboring country.
