India ranked 67 in a survey conducted on the condition of patients at the time of their death. In India, there is no set policy for end of life care at the last stage of life. However, now AIIMS is preparing to make a policy for such patients, so that the patients who have lost their hopes of survival, should be treated with dignity and with minimal suffering.
The hospital has formed a core committee to look after such patients. Among these patients, apart from cancer patients, there are people suffering from other diseases whose chances of survival are gone. The purpose of this committee is to identify such patients and take maximum care of them, reduce their pain and provide emotional and spiritual help.
Dr. Randeep Guleria, director of AIIMS, told the Times of India that in such a stage, the patient’s family asks them to stop treatment. They do not want to see the patient in his last days in the hospital and with so much tubes and medicines. AIIMS EOLC (End of Life Care) policy will be made keeping these things in mind.
