Facebook is struggling to keep the user trust afloat as it has been accused of breach of trust and leaking personal user data. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was summoned to the Senate for the same.
In a public confession, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg testified in front of a Senate Joint Committee of both Judiciary and Commerce, Science, and Transportation on “Facebook, Social Media Privacy, and the Use and Abuse of Data.”
It was in the Hart Senate Office Building 216 that the hearing was held. 44 Senators were allotted 5 minutes per person to ask questions from Zuckerberg and get answers. The most prominent questions were on how Facebook handles user data and how Cambridge Analytica could affect the Facebook users.
Earlier Zuckerberg already accepted the “breach of trust” and confessed that he needed to fix it. He was very apologetic because of the mishap and was quoted as saying that “I started Facebook, and at the end of the day I’m responsible for what happens on our platform,” he confessed this soon after the Cambridge Analytica debacle.
Zuckerberg also said and promised that he would work through this mess and provide better and more secure service and also claimed that the preventive measures have been already put in to place.
The investigation is critical to the future of Zuckerberg’s massive company and it is based on the accusations on the social media firm for manipulating data from its user base to influence the US general election which elected Donald Trump as President.
Facebook is under immense pressure with millions of users deleting their account and an anti-Facebook campaign on Twitter, which has already led to the loss of trust and goodwill for the major social networking online company.
Many prominent personalities from all across the globe deleted their accounts protesting against the date leak. People now perceive Facebook as a threat to their privacy and have become very apprehensive about uploading their personal data on Facebook.
The Brand Facebook has surely been tarnished because of the breach in data security and Facebook will see tough times ahead if it continues with its malpractices.
The controversy has painted Facebook dark and black and it will have to take solid measures to instill the faith back into the multi-billion dollar company
