World’s 18th ranked player Maria Sakkari of Greece has made it to the semi-finals of the French Open-2021, the second Grand Slam tournament of the year. She has booked a place in the semi-finals by defeating current winner World No.-8 Iga Swiatek in the quarter-finals of women’s singles played on Wednesday. This was the first time that Maria had reached the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam in her career and now she has gone a step ahead and secured a place in the last-4. Maria Sakkari won the match in straight sets 6-4, 6-4. This match lasted for one hour and 35 minutes.
After reaching the semi-finals of a Grand Slam for the first time, Maria said, “I have no words. It’s like a dream come true. I don’t know, it’s a great feeling and I couldn’t have done this without my team. We have a long way to go, but today we have taken a big step. I am not going to tell you the game plan because we have to play again. I’m not going to tell you our secrets. I told myself that I have to enjoy this match which I did.
Barbora Krejcikova will face
To reach the final, Maria Sakkari will face Czech Republic’s Barbora Krejcikova, who defeated American youth sensation Coco Gauff. Barbora won the match 7-6 (8-6) 6-3. It took them one hour and 50 minutes to win this match. This will also be Barbora’s first Grand Slam final.
“I never thought that I would one day stand here. This is something I never dreamed of. I was playing a good match and Coco played a great match too…She is 17 years old…It is wonderful.
All four arrived here for the first time
Apart from these two, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia and Tamara Zidansek of Slovenia also made it to the semi-finals. These four players have reached the semi-finals of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in their career. While talking about these four, only Anastasia had to play the quarter-finals of the first Grand Slam, the other three players had reached the quarter-finals of the Grand Slam for the first time. One more thing has been decided by this that the French Open will get a new champion in the women’s singles category for the sixth consecutive year.
