The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has launched a new portal to report the theft or loss of mobile phones. Through this new portal, mobile users will be able to easily trace mobile phones. The Department of Telecommunications has launched the CEIR (Central Equipment Identity Register) portal. The platform has been launched first for Maharashtra as a pilot project. Later this project will be launched for mobile users across the country.
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has been working on this pilot project since 2017. In this project, the Global IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number is being fed, with the help of which the cloned IMEI can be traced. The Central Government announced this pilot project in 2017, under which users will be able to report their lost mobile on the CEIR platform. Based on the database recorded on this portal, the mobile phone can be traced in case of theft or loss.
From 2017, the Telecom Ministry started feeding the global IMEI number of 15 digits in this database. On this platform, users will be able to block their lost or stolen mobile number, due to which the users do not get any financial loss. Nowadays, users keep many types of personal information in their smartphones, from bank details. In such a situation, after the launch of this portal, it will be difficult to access the stolen smartphone.
How does CEIR work?
Information on all handsets is available on this new portal of the Department of Telecommunications. In this, the handset is white, gray and blacklisted. In this list, you can use a mobile IMEI mobile. At the same time, the devices with the gray lists are not as per standard but they can be used. Devices with a gray list will be monitored. At the same time, users will not be able to use blacklisted IMEI. Devices with blacklist IMEI will not have access to connect mobile networks.
After the mobile phone is lost or stolen, users have to register an FIR. For this, DoT has issued a helpline number 14422. The department will blacklist the device after the police complaint. CEIR will have information about IMEI of every device around the world, due to which the cloning of the device will be stopped.
