Rakesh Asthana will be the commissioner of Delhi Police just three days before his retirement. He appointed for a period of one year until July 31, 2022. As per a Union home ministry order, his date of retirement was July 31, 2021, but it has been extended by one year “as a special case in public interest” announced the Union Home Ministry on Tuesday. This is one of the very few instances when an IPS officer outside of the AGMUT cadre has been appointed as the Delhi Police chief.
Asthana got a clean chit from the CBI in February 2020 in connection with allegations of accepting bribes from fraud-accused pharma company Sterling Biotech. In March 2019, he was cleared by the CBI in another bribery case, linked to meat exporter Moin Qureshi.
