Delhi’s Indra Gandhi International Airport came 16th in the global ranking of the world’s busiest airports during 2017. It had a double-digit growth in air passenger traffic months after months in the year 2017.
The Indra Gandhi International Airport jumped six places to break into the top 20 and finally came 16th.
Moreover, New York’s John F Kennedy Airport, which earlier made to the top 20 in 2016, slipped out of the top 20 this year.
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport was the busiest Airport in the world once again in 2017 and it handled 103 million passengers, while Delhi airport handled 64 million passengers in 2017, thus coming 16th.
With the booming economy and growing per capita income India is on the verge of being one of the largest aviation markets in the world in the years to follow. India has a population base of 1.3 billion individuals and also the move towards liberalization of the aviation sector, India is stated to be one of the most lucrative markets for the aviation sector in the times to come
According to ACI’s World Airport Traffic Forecast, in the years to come India will become the third largest aviation market in the world, in terms of passenger throughput, after the United States and China by 2020.
Kolkata saw a year on year growth of 27 percent, Hyderabad saw 19.6 percent and Chennai saw 12.9 percent, these were also the fastest growing airports in the world according to the report.
According to ACI China will add an additional 3 billion passengers by 2020 which will represent a 21 percent share in the global passenger traffic growth.
Airports in China such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou were the largest contributors to passenger traffic and cargo volumes growth according to ACI.
