International Men’s Day 2022:
On 19th November, every year, the nation celebrates International Men’s Day. We explain the origin of this day and why it is celebrated
Since when Is international men’s day celebrated?
It was Thomas Oaster, a professor at the university of Missouri-Kansas, who introduced International Men’s Day in 1992. Although it did not become popular until 1999, the year in which it began to be noticed worldwide.
Ingeborg Breines, director of UNESCO’s Women and Culture of Peace Program contributed in the initiative. Other organizations dependent on the UN such as PAHO notice it and organize activities around it.
The World Health Organization (WHO) acknowledge that it is a good initiative to embrace the issue of equity and men’s health on the international platform.
However, the date of International Men’s Day is not yet officially recognized, nor is it a massive event on the calender, at the level of International Women’s Day. In some countries, International Men’s Day is celebrated on March 19, coinciding with Father’s Day.
Why is International Men’s Day celebrated?
In November 2009, 6 basic pillars of International Men’s Day were ratified, with the aim of serving as a basis for future entities or individuals who wish to celebrate it. They can give an outline in the following:
- Promotes positive and more normalized male role models. Many times it seems that the man sees himself in models, movies star, athletes of great fame, when the reality is that a man of daily life, a worker with a dignified and honest life, predominates.
- Celebrate’s men contributions to society, family, child care and the environment.
- Emphasize men’s health and well-being, both physically and spiritually and emotionally.
- Focus attention on unfairness against men in social attitudes and belief.
- Enhance gender relations and encourage gender equality.
- Make a secure and finer nation where men can reach their full prospective.
What can you do to celebrate International Men’s Day:

If you want to celebrate privately with your family, you can have a small party and even invite other people in your family, uncles, cousins, grandparents and also the women so that all together you can enjoy a day to thank the man their contribution and also to convince them to take care of themselves and play sports to improve their health.
Events related to International Men’s Day:
- The creators of international Men’s Day organize events related to the theme throughout the month of November.
- BAM ( Being A Man ) is one of the first massive events to broadly address gender issues from the male point of view.
- Movember: It is an annual event widely publicized worldwide in which men grow their moustaches during the month of November and talks are organized to raise awareness about their men’s health, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, depression, male suicides, physical inactivity, etc.
- International Men’s Health Week: It is celebrated in June in some European countries, Australia, Brazil, The United States, New Zealand etc.
