Veteran Malayalam actor Mohan Raj, widely recognized for his unforgettable role as the villain Keerikkadan Jose in the film Kireedam, passed away at the age of 70. Mohan Raj had been battling multiple health issues and was undergoing treatment at his residence in Kanjiramkulam when he breathed his last.
A Career of Iconic Villains
Numerous memorable villainous roles mark Mohan Raj’s three-decade career in Malayalam cinema. Apart from his most iconic portrayal in Kireedam, he also played pivotal roles in popular films like Uppukandam Brothers, Chenkol, Aaram Thampuran, and Narasimham. His intense screen presence and dynamic performances made him one of the most respected actors in the industry.
Tributes from Industry Stalwarts
Mohanlal, who shared the screen with Mohan Raj in Kireedam, paid an emotional tribute, recalling his friend’s magnificent presence on screen. “Keerikkadan Jose became an eternal character, and being recognized by that name is a testament to Raj’s talent,” said Mohanlal. Actor Mammootty and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan also expressed their deep condolences.
A Journey from Enforcement Directorate to Films
Mohan Raj had an intriguing career before stepping into the film industry. Born in Kerala to a middle-class family, he completed a degree in economics and joined the Indian Army at 20. However, due to a leg injury, he left the army and later passed competitive exams to join the Enforcement Directorate. His foray into films came in his mid-30s with the 1988 movie Moonnam Mura, and he continued his work with the ED while pursuing acting.
