In a clean sweep of the top five selling passenger vehicles in India, Maruti Suzuki has ended 2017-18 with a bang.

The top five selling models are:

  • Alto with 2.5 lakh units
  • Dzire with 2.4 lakh units
  • Baleno with 1.9 lakh units
  • Swift with 1.7 lakh units
  • WagonR with 1.68 lakh units

Maruti Baleno grew an amazing 58 percent year-on-year and the second highest growth was of Dzire. Older more established models grew modestly. Swift grew 5.4 percent and WagonR’s growth dipped by 2 percent

In the top ten selling models list are also VitaraBrezza which cam no. 7 and Celerio which ranked at no. 10.

Vitara Brezza vehicles sold grew almost 37 percent coming to 1.5 lakh units and Celerio’s sales dipped by 3 percent to 94,721 units.

Earlier the entry level hatchback segment was the major area of focus for the company but as trends are changing, Indian car buyers are developing a taste for bigger vehicles as seen in the sales of Dzire and VitaraBreeza. SUV’s and Sedans are the new buzzwords in the Indian car marketing which is steadily evolving as per capita income is increasing.

According to a Maruti dealer, “That should explain why WagonR sales showed a decline and Swift growth was just over 5%, alongside the fact that these are relatively older models. Even the newish Celerio has seen growth contract from 97,361 units in FY16-17 to 94,721 units in FY17-18.”

Maruti has retained its position as the most dominant and popular car company in India. Its core focus on comfort and mileage has struck a chord with the money wise Indian car buyer and that’s why almost seven of the top ten selling passenger cars in India are from Maruti Suzuki.

The Indian market is a tough terrain, but Maruti seems to have evolved with the market and is providing the customers with new and brilliant models.
