Beating and knocking out Northern Ireland’s Kristina O’Hara in the final on Saturday, Mary Kom added another medal to her packed medal tally by winning the gold in her Common Wealth games debut.
In what could be her last Common Wealth outing, Mary Kom, 35, who is also an Olympic gold medalist, made it a victory to remember after a brilliant performance as she won a unanimous verdict of 5-0.
Lacking the experience and finesse to win over the experienced and mature Mary Kom, the 22-year-old O’Hara failed to take advantage of her longer reach.
Mary Kom fought brilliantly and completely dominated the fight as she struck at will and her right hooks were especially telling. O’Hara just couldn’t match up to the strength and vitality of the experienced fighter.
O’Hara appeared time in front of the ace fighter and Mary Kom was enjoying herself, dominating the game by the second round
Around five months ago Mary Kom had struck gold in the Asian Championship, before winning and achieving top honors at the India Open which took place in January this year. She also won silver at the Strandja Memorial Tournament in Bulgaria, before coming and scoring for India in the Common Wealth games which is being held at Gold Coast in Australia.
This takes India’s medal tally to 42. India has high hopes from all its sportsmen and all is going well as far is India is concerned.
With medals in badminton, table tennis, wrestling, boxing and hockey, India surely looks at the top of its game but compared to other developed countries India still lags behind in the Medal Tally.
This is an Indication for the Indian sports authorities to rethink their budgets and strategies so that Indian sportsmen get better facilities and training. This will surely go a long way in increasing the medal tally year after year.
