Player of the political arena – Mulayam Singh Yadav
It is said that in the days of Mulayam Singh Yadav’s youth, if his hand reached the waist of his opponent, then no matter how tall or strong he was, he did not have any fun to free himself from his grip. When Mulayam’s wrestling was in its final stages in the arena, we used to close our eyes. Our eyes would open only when there was a sound from the crowd. It used to come, ‘Ho gayi, ho gayi’ and we used to think that our brother had slammed the wrestler in front.” After becoming a teacher, Mulayam gave up wrestling completely. But till the end of his life, he kept organizing riots in his village Saifai.
But many political analysts tracking Uttar Pradesh believe that because of this wrestling trick, Mulayam was equally successful in the arena of politics, even though he had no political background. Mulayam Singh’s talent was first recognized by Nathu Singh, a leader of the Praja Socialist Party, who got him a ticket for the Jaswantnagar assembly seat in the 1967 elections.
