Myanmar coup: This preparation of the army is seen as a sign of ending the opposition in the country after the military coup on 1 February.
In Kachin, situated in the north of the country, demonstrations are being held in protest against the army coup for nine consecutive days. There is also news of security forces firing on protesters here.
A UN official has accused Myanmar’s military of ‘declaring war’ against the people.
Tom Andrews, the UN Special Rapporteur for Myanmar, has said that army generals are ‘indicating desperation’ and their account will be fixed for this.
He wrote on social media, “It seems that the army has declared war against the people of Myanmar. Raids are being conducted at midnight, people are being arrested, their rights are being taken away.
” The internet has also been shut down again. Army convoys are entering residential areas. It seems that army generals are frustrated. “
The European Union, the United States, and Britain have issued a statement saying “We appeal to the security forces not to commit violence against the protesting protesters following the coup of the republican government”.
Myanmar’s army overthrew the elected government led by Aung San Suu Kyi this month.
In November last year, Suu Kyi’s party won the elections with an overwhelming majority, but the army accused it of rigging the elections.
Suu Kyi is currently under house arrest. Hundreds of activists and opposition leaders have also been detained.
