The Karnataka government has ordered all schools and colleges in the state to make the national anthem mandatory in the morning prayers. The order will be applicable in government, aided and non-government schools in the Karnataka. This decision of the BJP government of Karnataka is being described as a big decision after the recent Savarkar vs Tipu Sultan poster controversy in many cities. At the same time, the wind of nationalism in the nation is also being linked with the move to give direction.
Karnataka Education Act, 1983
However, the Karnataka Education Act, 1983 has clarified rules regarding national anthem. According to The Hindu, Karnataka Education Act, 1983, respect of the national flag & singing of the national anthem regularly in the morning is mandatory in all schools. But the issue was that some private schools were not following this rule. In this situation, the government issued an order & warned such schools. The Deputy Director, Department of Public Instruction, Bangalore had visited some private schools in the past. During this he found that in some institutions the national anthem was not being sung in the morning prayers. After this, the government issued an order warning the schools about the necessity of the national anthem. Meanwhile, singing the national anthem inside the classroom has been allowed for some institutes citing space constraints.
