In Sri Lankan politics, the contribution of the Rajapaksa family cannot be ignored. The family has given numerous thought leaders into the political field out of which, Nirupama Rajapaksa Nadesan is among those who believed in making impactful changes through hard work, dedication and passion. Born in 1962, in the Dominion of Ceylon, she got her primary education in a convent school. She is a graduate student from the University of Moratuwa and was extremely bright in her studies and other activities.

Nirupama was very enthusiastic about getting connected with everyone. She had noticed that a number of members of her family have contributed to the political field. Her late father, George Rajapaksa was the cousin of Sri Lanka’s president, Gotabaya Rajapaksa and his elder brother, Mahinda Rajapaksa, later become the prime minister of the country. She used to observe everything sharply and what all these people follow in their daily routines and help people the needy. When she become young and married the famous hospitality business legend, Thirukumar Nadesan, she decided to fulfil her dream to enter into politics and bring some notable changes both to the society and the nation’s development.

As Tirukumar Nadesan was involved in a huge business, there were connections in other countries and renowned industrialists. Nadesan set up different companies and has contacts in different countries related to various properties in different parts of the world including London, Sydney etc. Both Nirupama and Thirukumar have made investments in properties due to which, they have alleged being involved in the Pandor Papers Case. Later, they have also been accused of making fraudulent efforts and were involved in unauthorized construction over a land using public funds. The extremely hyped Malwana Mansion Case got highlighted everywhere and the couple was charged to set up shell companies and misusing the public funds. Nirupama Rajapaksa Nadesan and her husband showed all the legal papers to the court and pleaded not guilty to the matter. Later, the witness denied raising any charge against them and refused to file any complaint against them. They both then proved non-guilty and were acquitted when the court found that there was no evidence to proceed with the case further.
Mr Nadesan explored that he didn’t know about the construction going there and her wife also didn’t have any information regarding the incident. They both then declared that there’s no such undisclosed wealth in offshore countries and they have presented and disclosed all the papers related to the properties. The Sri Lankan politician has a daughter and a son and they all live like a happy family. They all respect everyone and help the needy and participate in social and cultural programs to support nature, society and backward people. Despite having strong political connections, Nirupama never misused them for her own benefit and had always believed to teach honesty and hard work to get success to her children.
Nirupama Rajapaksa Political Existence
She first came into political existence in 1994 when she got elected as the Member of Parliament for The Hambantota District. She was constantly in touch with every family in her constituency and people knew before to have her as a leader. When she noticed that people are expecting a lot from her, she decided to take part in the general elections. When he got elected as MP, she started working with complete dedication. Nirupama Rajapaksa Nadesan made significant contributions in the field of education, women empowerment, and providing important facilities to backward and rural areas. By now, she already had made a special place among the common man. That turned into another successive victory in the general elections and she became the MP once again. In 2010, it was the term when she got the actual power to do something more special for the people. She was appointed as the deputy minister of water supply and drainage. She then decided not to waste a single moment and set up different committees to prepare reports to determine the current situation of water resources. When she got everything, she started making effective plans to utilize these resources for the welfare of farmers, villages and infrastructural growth.

She approached the World Bank and made them aware of the importance of Sri Lankan water resources from the global tourism point of view. She became successful in convincing and approving a healthy loan to reshape the water resource structure. She also arranged meetings with leading industrialists to tell them about the benefits of making investments in water resources. She was very good at telling people the actual bigger picture of future development and hence, she made ready to bring amazing investment projects for the development. Today, the Sri Lankan water resources are enriched with tremendous infrastructural growth and numerous commercial projects are going over to produce energy and employment opportunities in the country. Leaders like Nirupama are therefore essential to have in every political structure to offer the nation a bright approach to development, success and prosperity.
