Its only March and a number of films have already tasted success and made the mark on the Box Office. January was Padmaavat’s month, February was all about PadMan and now March is seeing Raid succeeding
On the surface these films seem to be different, but a common theme underlines them, that is that all of them are rooted in reality. Padmaavat was a period film, PadMan a social drama and Raid a crime thriller. But they are all based on true events.
March saw Raid succeeding at the Box Office. It is a story of a newly appointed IT Commissioner, Amay Patnaik as he conducts the country’s biggest raid on the city’s most rich and well connected politician and businessman MLA Rameshwar singh.
PadMan is based on a true story of Arunachalam Muruganantham, the individual who initiated a revolution by creating a low cost sanitary pad making machine. PadMan is the story of the protagonists trials and tribulations, before he comes out with a solution and finally tastes success. Although PadMan is based on a true story, Balki takes cinematic liberty by introducing Sonam Kapoor’s character Rhea, who is totally a figment of the film makers imagination.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat has definitely had the most interesting relationship with its claims to reality. Although the film was haunted by violent Karni Sena protests, the makers did acknowledge that the film is based on the epic poem ‘Padmavat’ by Sufi poet Jayasi, but that does not make the film a work of fiction, according to the makers of Padmaavat.
While Rani Padmavati’s (Deepika Padukone) existence has been questioned by renowned historians over the years, there is no doubting the fact that Alauddin Khilji (Ranveer Singh) and Maharaja Rawal Singh (Shahid Kapoor) were real historical people.
Reality based cinema is garnering accolades and audience support, now, much more than any other time. Indian audiences have matured and look forward towards grown up stories.
