Senior BJP leader and former minister Samir Dey passed away today at the age of 67 while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Cuttack. He had been battling a kidney infection and was receiving care in the ICU for several days.
Dey, a prominent figure in Odisha politics, was elected to the Odisha Assembly three times from the Cuttack seat between 1995 and 2004. He also held key ministerial positions in both the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) coalition governments in the state from 2000 to 2009.
He served as the Urban Development Minister from 2000 to 2004 and as the Higher Education Minister from 2004 to 2009.
Expressing grief over Dey’s passing, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi offered condolences on ‘X’ and announced that the late leader’s last rites would be conducted with full state honors.
