200 surgeries in 2004, 20 thousand in 2019
Yes, in the year 2004, where the number of weight loss surgeries in the country was just 200, in the year 2019, this number has increased to 20 thousand. The data has been released by the Obesity Surgery Society of India (OSSI). When the number of patients is increasing, it is obvious that a surgeon will also be needed. In such a situation, where the number of doctors who performed weight loss surgery in the year 2003 was only 8, now the number of doctors who have done weight loss surgery has increased to 450 all over the country. States like Delhi, Punjab, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu are at the forefront of weight loss surgery every year.

In the US, 2.5 million bariatric surgeries in 1 year are
shortened by bypassing a portion of the stomach in weight loss surgery, also known as bariatric surgery, to reduce appetite. However, the number of bariatric surgeries in India is still much lower than in the US where 2.5 lakh people underwent this weight loss surgery last year. Dr. Arun Prasad, President of OSSI, says that most people come to get weight loss surgery when they do not lose weight even after making lifestyle changes and want to look good in a short time.

If BMI is more than 32.5, then surgery is required
Normal body mass index BMI of any person’s body is 22.5 kg / m2. When a person has a BMI of 32.5, he is placed in the category of obesity and is advised to undergo surgery. BMIs of 40, 50 and 60 are placed in the category of extreme obesity. Dr. Prasad, who is also the head of the Center for Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery at Manipal Hospital, explains, “The number of people undergoing weight loss surgery is also increasing, which includes surgery to control diabetes, snoring and avoid joint pains.” Let’s get it done.

Healthy lifestyle and diet can prevent surgery
Dr. Dr Prasad says, “Such a large number of people are getting weight loss surgery to avoid obesity and diabetes but surgery can be avoided by adopting healthy lifestyle and healthy eating methods . Policy makers at large levels need to find ways to develop a healthy lifestyle habit in children right from the school level. Although most people who have undergone weight loss surgery are between 30 and 40 years old, but so far 15-year-old children are also undergoing such surgery.
