The man in the picture is Maulana Sajjad Nomani, spokesperson for the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, who has been at the center of a recent controversy. Fahad Ahmad is contesting the Maharashtra Assembly elections from the Anushakti Nagar constituency under the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) banner. This is his first election. He is up against former minister Nawab Malik’s daughter, Sana Malik. Swara Bhaskar has also entered the political arena to campaign for her husband, which is why she met Maulana Nomani.

In the photo, Swara is wearing a peach-colored chikankari suit, with her dupatta covering her head completely. This led to trolling regarding her appearance, her weight gain, and the fact that she wasn’t wearing a full-body burqa. Critics also targeted her for the contradiction between her usual advocacy for women’s rights and her meeting with Maulana Nomani, who has made controversial statements about women.

Maulana’s Controversial Statement

Maulana Sajjad Nomani has previously made a highly controversial statement regarding women, which sparked significant debate. In his statement, he said: “It doesn’t matter whether a daughter wears a hijab to college or not, but she should not be left alone. If you have to send your daughters to college, meet the college principal and ask whether she attended all classes or went somewhere else.” This statement was widely criticized.

Questions Raised on CJI Chandrachud

Swara Bhaskar is known for raising questions on social issues, and her comments have often put her in the spotlight. Recently, she criticized Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud’s statement on the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid issue. CJI Chandrachud had shared how, at one point during the Ayodhya dispute, he had prayed to God for guidance on finding a solution. Swara took to Instagram and commented, “It was an easy way out for the country’s Chief Justice to blame God for his poor decisions.”
