India got its third Gold medal in the 2018 Commonwealth games in Australia on Day 3.
This gold also came from the weightlifting department as Sathish Kumar Sivalingam won the gold medal in the men’s 77kg weightlifting category.
This was the fifth medal for India in the 2018 Commonwealth games.
Satish who is 25 also had won a gold medal in the 2014 Commonwealth games in Scotland and repeated his victory by defeating Jack Oliver from England, who got silver on Saturday.
Sathish successfully lifted 136kg in snatch and started the event with a bang, which put him in the lead. Then Oliver made a successful first attempt at 141kg which put him in the lead.
Sathish struck back in style by successfully lifting 144kg in his third attempt to stay just one behind the Englishman.
As Oliver failed in his third attempt to lift 148kg things went even better for India, meaning that he held just a kg advantage over Sathish going into the clean and jerk.
While the Englishman opted for 167, Sathish was always the favorite from that point after choosing 169kg as his first clean and jerk lift. Sathish easily made a successful left in his first attempt while Oliver seemed to have some difficulty but also made completed his attempt.
Sathish for his next weight chose 173kg while the English weightlifter settled on 171. The Indian had to wait and saw Oliver fail in his second and third attempt at 171kg.
Sathish stepped to floor with the gold beckoning and with a big grunt made a successful clean and jerk lift of 173kg to secure the gold medal for India.
India is going strong in the Commonwealth games and all hopes are pinned on all sportsmen to bring in as many medals as possible
