Veere di wedding

The central theme of Shashanka Ghosh’s Veere Di Wedding is simple-that to accept people as they are.

There are 4 women with different issues in the film and also an unusual gay couple with a nagging mother and a firangi son-in-law who is yet to be accepted by the family. All of them are seeking acceptance and validation in their own ways.

The film is masterfully crafted and sees to it that all the characters who are stereotypes get validation by the end of the story.

The film has too many characters and also confusion and the film turns out to be a khichdi of sorts which taste average but doesn’t score the homerun

It is messily written, and the performances, save for Kareena Kapoor Khan (who is effortlessly badass), largely range from ‘spunky but strictly average’ (Swara Bhaskar) to ‘often struggles’ (Sonam K Ahuja, as she now goes). Sumeet Vyas may win a few fans among those who haven’t already seen him do this and better in his work with TVF, but that’s about it. (Oh, and ShikhaTalsania is a hoot.)

Although there is a lot of scrambling and an unfocused plot with average acting, the film has its moments. Which include a reference to Andaz Apna Apna, the stereotypical Delhi wedding and a drunken banter between friends in their late 20’s are all part of the film and make it worth watching.

There are many hammy moments which have been outnumbered by the fun moments and you will groan at least a few times because of the clichés and some poorly written scenes and also when the filmmakers are trying just too hard to convey their message through the film and the film gets preachy.

The sensible writing was missing in the film and it is pretty strange that the filmmakers while mounting such a film did not take that into account and took the audience for granted.

Veere Di Wedding is a flawed and a fun film and surely deserves a onetime watch for its sassy dialogues, the on-screen chemistry of the 4 leading ladies and its outrageous guts. So go catch some of the fun for yourself in a theatre near you.
