Aaryavir Sehwag

Aaryavir Sehwag, the son of former India cricketer Virender Sehwag, made headlines on Thursday with a spectacular double century for Delhi in their ongoing Cooch Behar Trophy match against Meghalaya. The match is part of the prestigious national four-day tournament for under-19 players, organized annually by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Delhi, opting to bat first, were responding to Meghalaya’s first-innings total of 260 runs. On Day 2 of the match, Delhi had already gained a substantial lead of 208 runs, reaching 48 for two at stumps. This commanding position was built on a sensational 180-run opening stand between Aaryavir and Arnav S Bugga. Bugga, who also played an important knock, scored a century before being dismissed. Aaryavir, however, continued his dominance at the crease, remaining unbeaten on 200 off 229 balls, including 34 boundaries and two sixes.

In the ongoing innings, Dhanya Nakra was also unbeaten on 98 off 91 balls at stumps, further strengthening Delhi’s position.

Earlier this year, Aaryavir had made his debut in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy, where he scored a valuable 49 runs against Manipur, helping Delhi secure a six-wicket victory.

Sehwag’s Support for His Son’s Cricket Journey

Despite being the son of a legendary cricketer, Aaryavir has managed to stay focused on his own career without any undue pressure from his father. In an interview from 2019, Virender Sehwag emphasized that he did not want his son to simply follow in his footsteps. He said, “I don’t want to see another Virender Sehwag in them. They can become a Virat Kohli, a Hardik Pandya, or an MS Dhoni. But they don’t have to be cricketers. They are free to choose their careers, and we will help them achieve as far as possible. But the bottom line is to become good human beings. That’s non-negotiable.”

However, in 2023, Sehwag revealed that his son was already working hard to make his mark in the world of cricket, with aspirations to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL). “My son is 15 years old and is already working hard to get a chance to play in the IPL,” Sehwag shared on Star Sports.

He also spoke about the influence of the IPL on young talent, saying, “The IPL has benefited young talent the most. Earlier, nobody got noticed from Ranji Trophy performances and couldn’t make it to the Indian team. But now, if you perform well in the IPL and showcase your talent, you immediately get an opportunity to play for the Indian team. Because of the IPL, so many children from smaller states of the country have started taking cricket seriously and strive hard to participate in the IPL.”

Aaryavir Sehwag’s impressive double century in the Cooch Behar Trophy is another sign of the young cricketer’s growing potential, and with his continued hard work, he is certainly one to watch in the coming years.
