India got its second Gold medal in the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast from Sanjita Chanu.

2014 Glasgow gold medalist DikaToua of Papua New Guinea with a total lift (snatch plus clean and jerk) of 192 kg, gave her tough competition but Sanjita overcame a stiff challenge and won the gold for India.

This was India’s second gold in the weightlifting category. Sanjita also registered a Games record in snatch with a lift of 84kg, which her in the top position in the event. In 2014 Sanjita won the won the 48kg event in Glasgow and struck gold. And now this is her second gold.

With Mirabai Chanu winning gold on Day 1 while P Gururaja claiming the silver — both in weightlifting.This is India’s third medal of CWG 2018

Sanjita initially started of lifting 81kg in snatch and in her second attempt confidently lifted 83kg and finally, she broke Swarti Singh record in Glasgow by lifting 84lg in her third snatch attempt.

High on confidence, the Indian weightlifter, went for a Commonwealth Games record in clean and jerk by attempting to lift 112kg but despite a clean pickup, she failed to get a successful lift, giving DikaToua a ray of hope. Sanjita looked in complete ease as she began the clean and jerk round with a lift of 104kg and then all but sealed the gold with a successful 108kg lift.

Also initially on the first day, P Gururaja claimed a silver medal in the men’s 56kg event to open India’s medal account in the quadrennial extravaganza.

India’s gold medal tally is rising and India is expecting many such more gold medals from its athletes. Recognition at the global stage will surely lead to bigger training budgets and better facilities and recognition for talent back home.
