Captain Vikram Batra Was nicknamed Sher Shah during Kargil War:
Captain Vikram Batra and his Delta Company, from the sub-sectors Drass & Batalik, were given the order to capture peak 5140 on June 19.
He was nicknamed Sher Shah and he decided with his Delta Company to surprise the enemy from the rear. Captain Batra and his men climbed to 17,000 feet to surprise their enemies. They began to climb the rock cliff, but the Pakistani defenders stopped them as they approached the top.
They climbed the cliff, and as soon as they reached the top, Pakistani soldiers pinned them at the mouth of the rock with machine-gun fire. But the brave Indian soldiers weren’t deterred and Captain Batra and five other men climbed up.
Three soldiers were killed by Captain Vikram Batra in close combat. He was also badly wounded during the exchange, but he managed to reassemble his troops and continue the mission. He inspired his men to complete their mission, even though he was severely injured. At 3:30 AM on June 20, 1999, the point 5140 was captured.
